Today, we’re proud to re-introduce our Founder and Managing Director, Dean Yates - a leader whose vision and dedication have played, and continue to play, an instrumental role in driving MDN’s growth and long-term success.
About Dean Yates
Q: Can you tell us about your career journey - where did it all begin?
It all began when I met my wife, and her dad offered me an apprenticeship. From that moment, my career in the electrical industry took shape. I worked my way through various roles, learning and growing with each step. By the time I turned 26, I was ready for a new challenge, and that decision set the course for everything that followed.
Q: Looking back over the past two decades, what have been the standout moments or milestones that have defined MDN’s journey?
One of the first big milestones for us was gaining our NICEIC accreditation, a real moment of pride that marked the start of our journey. Not long after, we secured our first major project, delivering the Sports Hall and Teaching Block at Langley Grammar School.
Over the years, each new accreditation has brought that same sense of excitement and achievement. But the moment that truly stands out for me came during a meeting with what was then a potential client. That conversation completely changed my outlook and opened my eyes to what was possible. I still look back on that moment with gratitude, it played a huge part in shaping how I think and approach opportunities today.
Q: In five words, how would you describe your leadership style?
Authentic, honest, compassionate, supportive, and strategic.

Q: What inspired you to start MDN 20 years ago?
After completing my apprenticeship, I began to feel that my efforts weren’t truly valued. It was a tough realisation, but it pushed me to make an important decision, to move on. At first, I had no plans to start my own company. However, when a project I had lined up unexpectedly fell through, I began picking up smaller jobs through contacts. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, the idea for the business was born.
Q: Did you always envision MDN becoming what it is today?
In a word, no. Starting a company was never part of the initial plan. But, as with most things in life, plans evolve. Looking back now, I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come and excited about what the business continues to grow into.
Q: You’ve championed apprenticeships and training over the years - why is that so integral to you and to MDN?
Having been an apprentice myself, I deeply appreciate the opportunities I was given early in my career. That’s why I’m always keen to offer the same chances to others, and I truly understand the value they can bring to a business. I firmly believe in the importance of staff longevity, which means people need to feel valued and consistently challenged. Regular training and supporting team members to become the best versions of themselves at work isn’t just important, it’s essential.
Q: What’s one thing you want people to know about MDN that they might not already?
That at MDN, it’s really about people first. Behind every project we deliver is a team that’s supported, challenged, and valued. Our focus on developing our staff and nurturing talent is just as important as the work we do for our clients, because when our people thrive, so does the business.
Q: Looking ahead, what’s next for MDN? Where do you see the company in 5 - 10 years?
My focus moving forward is to develop our leadership team, fully embed our core beliefs throughout the business, and continue growing, but in a way that’s sustainable. Maintaining the high level of service and quality we’re known for is incredibly important to me, and I take immense pride in the standards we deliver to every client.

Q: What do you think makes someone a successful entrepreneur in the construction industry?
The key qualities I’ve found essential for success are knowledge, drive, passion, resilience, self-belief, and motivation.
Q: What challenges have you faced as a business leader, and how did you overcome them?
In the early days, the biggest challenges were getting paid on time and weathering financial setbacks. Over time, these experiences made me more commercially aware and astute, and taught me that sometimes saying “no” is better for the long-term health of the business. Today, we carefully evaluate potential clients to ensure the fit is right for both sides.
Beyond finances, finding the right staff can also be a challenge. But with the right processes in place, the best people always rise to the top, and that’s exactly what we focus on.
Q: If you could go back 20 years, what business advice would you give your younger self?
It’s crucial to build a strong network and focus on sustainable growth, without it, there’s a real risk of stagnation. But most importantly, surround yourself with great people. The right team can make all the difference in driving a business forward and achieving long-term success.
